Top 5 Low Price Companies To Buy Right Now

Lyrics from Palisades Park

Palisades Park, located in Northern New Jersey, was an amusement park that opened in 1898 and closed in 1971, but not before gaining acclaim in a song written by Chuck Barris (yes, the Gong Show host) and sung by Freddy "Boom-Boom" Cannon. In 1962 the song reached number three on the Billboard Top 100. It was covered by everyone from The Beach Boys to The Ramones and was even performed live by Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band.

Before the song hit the charts I was very familiar with Palisades Park. I grew up seeing commercials for it on television and being bombarded with their radio ads all summer long. Admissions were free and the rides were a nickel during the day and a dime at night. Even the low prices, the commercials and that song weren't enough to keep the park open.

Major amusement parks are quite different today. You typically buy one ticket to gain entrance to the park and then all the rides and shows are free. One company that owns many one-ticket amusement parks is Cedar Fair, LP (FUN). It is a limited partnership with an attractive distribution that operates nearly a dozen amusement parks, with several in Ohio and California. Knott's Berry Farm, near Los Angeles, is located not far from SeaWorld, Universal Studios and the Walt Disney Co.'s (DIS) Disneyland. Dorney Park in Eastern Pennsylvania faces competition from Hershey Park, Sesame Place and to a lesser extent, Great Adventure. Other parks face less competition and are located in Canada, Virginia, Minnesota and elsewhere. It also owns 5 hotels.
