Top 10 Defensive Companies To Watch In Right Now

U.S. stocks rose, sending the Standard & Poors 500 Index to its biggest three-day rally since January, on better-than-estimated economic data and assurances on stimulus efforts from Federal Reserve officials.

Nine of 10 industries in the S&P 500 (SPX) advanced. JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Citigroup Inc. gained more than 1.2 percent as financial companies rallied. An S&P index that tracks homebuilders surged 2.9 percent as D.R. Horton Inc. and Lennar Corp. increased at least 3.8 percent. Time Warner Cable Inc. jumped 4.4 percent as billionaire John Malone was said to be exploring scenarios for how Charter Communications Inc. could acquire the company.

The S&P 500 advanced 0.6 percent to 1,613.20 at 4 p.m. in New York. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 114.35 points, or 0.8 percent, to 15,024.49. Almost 6.2 billion shares changed hands on U.S. exchanges, 4.4 percent below the three-month average.

The data continues to show that the economy is growing at a very slow pace and that unemployment is improving at a very slow pace, Oliver Pursche, co-manager of the GMG Defensive Beta Fund and president of Suffern, New York-based Gary Goldberg Financial Services, said in a phone interview. The firm manages about $650 million. It means the likelihood that the Federal Reserve changing course on its monetary policy this year is very low, and that further solidifies the case that last weeks correction was emotionally driven and an overreaction.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Another under-$10 stock that's starting to trend within range of triggering a big breakout trade is Turtle Beach (HEAR), which is engaged in developing, commercializing and marketing audio technologies under the Turtle Beach and HyperSound brands in the U.S., Europe and internationally. This stock has been hit hard by the sellers so far in 2014, with shares off sharply by 29%.

If you take a look at the chart for Turtle Beach, you'll notice that this stock recently formed a triple bottom chart pattern at $9, $9.04 and $9.28 a share. Since forming that bottom, shares of HEAR have started to spike higher back above its 50-day moving average of $9.75 a share. That spike is quickly pushing shares of HEAR within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade.

Market players should now look for long-biased trades in HEAR if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance at $10.08 to $10.50 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 195,008 shares. If that breakout gets underway soon, then HEAR will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $11 to $11.40 a share. Any high-volume move above $11.40 will then give HEAR a chance to re-fill some of its previous gap-down-day zone from April that started near $13.50 a share.

Traders can look to buy HEAR off weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below those triple bottom support levels. One can also buy HEAR off strength once it starts to clear those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

There's a lot of uncertainty in the industry right now, especially for those with exposure to Macau, the world's largest gaming market. Gambling by high rollers has fallen off a cliff in the past six months due in part to a crackdown on corruption within Mainland China, and partly due to a general slowing of Asia's economic growth. As a result, gaming companies like Wynn Resorts (NASDAQ: WYNN  ) , Las Vegas Sands (NYSE: LVS  ) , and Melco Crown (NASDAQ: MPEL  ) , who get most or all of their revenue from Macau have seen their stocks drop.

Dear Fellow Shareholder: The U.S. economy continues to gradually expand, building on the 5+ year recovery from the Great Recession. Employment levels are improving, though progress has been slower than expected. Inflation, for now, remains subdued. As signaled and on cue, the Fed has been weaning the economy (and investors) off of the extraordinary 'quantitative easing' stimulus. Investors have generally shrugged off world events that might otherwise cause high anxiety (ISIS and the Middle East, Russia and Ukraine, etc.). As attention now turns to when the Fed will raise short-term interest rates, it seems plausible that volatility may intensify as the stimulus security blanket is removed. In the meantime, companies are taking advantage of the artificially low interest rate environment and sanguine investor sentiment. Merger activity remains robust, fueled by cheap and readily available credit. The IPO market has been very active, headlined by the successful Alibaba offering in September. Corporate treasurers continue to issue loads of debt on attractive terms, locking in generationally low interest rates for long terms. While these conditions will not last forever, they have helped opportunistic managers accelerate equity value growth at many companies.Investment Commentary and Outlook After three years of seemingly non-stop gains, the stock market took a pause in the third quarter. While most large cap indices eked out modest positive returns, the broader investing waters were far less placid. Small cap stocks sold off as the Russell 2000 declined more than 7% during the quarter. Energy stocks, both large and small, fell materially as investors worried about too! much oil! and gas supply coming online in North America (what a difference a decade makes). High yield bonds wobbled briefly in July, then again in September. Increasingly, investors are not treating all securities the same, and as stock pickers we welcome this development. Evan Agostini, Invision/APCBS president and CEO Leslie Moonves ranked No. 2 on a list of highest paid CEOs. LOS ANGELES -- Once again, media company CEOs are among the highest paid executives in the nation, occupying six of the top 10 earning spots, according to an Associated Press/Equilar study. Compensation experts say a variety of factors are at play, including the gain in media stocks, the intangible value of talent in a hit-or-miss business, the control of shareholder power in very few hands, and the decline of the financial sector. Stock Outperformers Outsized stock growth boosts the value of stock and option grants. Media companies' shares have rebounded strongly since the 2008 recession, mainly because advertising spending grows in tandem with a growing economy. Will iWatch Really Change the Tide?

Best Performing Companies To Buy Right Now

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- iWatch, iWatch, iWatch. That's all that seemed relevant in the conversations surrounding Apple (AAPL) until the recent iPhone refresh. Oh yeah, and hedge fund manager Carl Icahn's recent position.

But by all measures, the iWatch has garnered quite a bit of attention -- especially since it's never been confirmed by Apple. Maybe I'm the only one that has any sort of issue with it. It's not that I don't think the device could be successful, but I'm certainly leery of it.

Maybe it's because I don't think I'll wear an iWatch or a pair of Google (GOOG) Glasses, the latter of which admittedly could be big, especially if they look cool and fashionable. But perhaps the potential iWatch can do something that we're not yet aware of, although it doesn't seem likely.

And the way Samsung rushed into the space with subpar products, just seems amateurish. It makes me feel like this all just a fad. While Apple wasn't the first company to the smartphone, mp3 player or tablet market, it was the first company to get it right. Maybe it'll be same story this time around. Let me be clear: I don't doubt Apple's ability to make incredible products. But I cease to be amazed by an iWatch idea thus far. It just doesn't seem like a game-changer to me. I guess, it doesn't need to be. As Apple has proved in the past, evolutionary products work, but it's the revolutionary ones that make the big bucks and allow for valuation and margin expansion. [Read: Dramatic 48-Hour Shift in Apple Sentiment] I suppose every new product or idea has to start somewhere. Look at the Apple Newton, which ultimately led to the Palm Pilot and then to smartphones and tablets. First generation products generally suck, but in the future they could be great, as long as someone can make them incredible -- which has been Apple's task now for about a decade, although that idea is now being challenged. [Read: This Unlikely Thief Could Steal Your Retirement] We keep hearing, "Apple can't innovate anymore, but an iWatch would change that." But I have to ask, how? This product alone, regardless of how it looks, operates or sells, is the only thing that analysts, investors and the tech world need to see for Apple to 'prove' itself worthy of innovation?

News flash: Apple doesn't give a damn. They know they can innovate and they're going to take their sweet time doing things how they always have: Their way.

Back to the iWatch. Health and wellness are one of the many up and coming trends that are likely here to stay. As a result, we see companies like FitBit and Nike (NKE) coming out with wearable technologies to track movement, distance and even sleep. [Read: Google's Android Tablets: The Achilles Heel]

So an iWatch could contribute significantly to that crowd. I know these chips are powerful, especially for mobile check-ins with merchants, healthcare and improved integration with technology down the road. If it actually looks cool, it could be an accessory or fashion piece, but I just don't see that catching on like wildfire.

Don't get me wrong: I want the iWatch to be successful. Hell, I'm a shareholder, so of course I want it to. But I just don't think it will be out-of-this-world great. If it can contribute to the bottom-line, then sure, let's go with it. But Apple will need something much bigger and much more significant going forward, like in the living room. Even based on optimistic estimates, the iWatch would 'only' add about $10 billion to $15 billion a year to Apple's annual sales figure, according to most estimates. I say "only" because Apple's annual sales are simply massive. For the iWatch to matter, it will have to have colossal sales, even though the optimistic $15 billion per year would be quite amazing for most companies. [Read: Red Hat's Growth Strategies Deserve a Tip of the Cap] So, while I want the iWatch to do well -- trust me, I do -- I'm not convinced it will be anything close to a game-changer, assuming it exists. But if for some reason, the introduction of it somehow convinces the market that this company can all of a sudden innovate, then sure, let's see it. -- Written by Bret Kenwell in Petoskey, Mich. . Halozyme's return on equity and assets are consistently in the red, ending at about -109% in return on equity in 2012, and -82% in return on assets in 2013. The company's competitors in biotechnology, such as Novo Nordisk (NVO) and Amgen Inc. (AMGN), post much more favorable return percentages. Yet, Halozyme's revenue, EBITDA and EPS growth percentages are much higher than the industry median, with Halozyme's revenue growth being higher than 97% of the global biotechnology industry.

We continue to argue Sanofi offers near term momentum. This is based on scope for pipeline expectations to rise (today's news on Dengue vaccine and recent PCSK9 data should help), coupled with an attractive valuation and earnings upside risk going into Q3. Sanofi trades at a >10% PE discount to the sector yet offers comparable growth (5YR EPS CAGR 10%). That said, we retain our Neutral rating as ! we have higher conviction on the LT fundamentals elsewhere in the sector, and remain concerned about the sustainability of growth for the diabetes franchise (>30% of profits) post 2017. Preferred Pharma plays include AstraZeneca (AZN), Bayer, Novo Nordisk (NVO) and UCB. Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMY) and Pfizer (PFE) are our preferred US plays.

Which Order To Use? Stop-Loss Or Stop-Limit Orders

Top 10 Small Cap Stocks To Buy Right Now

Traders and investors who seek to limit potential losses can use several types of orders that can get them into and out of the market at times when they may not be able to place an order manually. Stop-loss and stop-limit orders are two such order types that can accomplish this. But it is critical to understand the difference.

Stop Loss Orders

There are two types of stop-loss orders:

1) Sell-stop orders protect long positions by triggering a market sell order if the price falls below a certain level. The underlying assumption behind this strategy is that if the price falls this far, it may continue to fall much further, so the loss is capped by selling at this price.

Example:

Frank owns 1,000 shares of ABC stock. He purchased the stock at $30 a share, and it has risen to $45 on rumors of a potential buyout. He wants to lock in a gain of at least $10 per share, so he places a sell-stop order at $41. If the stock drops back below this price, then the order will become a market order and get filled at the current market price, which may be more (or more likely less) than the stop-loss price of $41. In this case, Frank might get $41 for 500 shares and $40.50 for the rest. But he will get to keep most of his gain.

2) Buy-stop orders are conceptually the same as sell stops except that they are used to protect short positions. A buy-stop order price will be above the current market price and will trigger if the price rises above that level.

Stop-Limit Orders

These orders are similar to stop-loss orders, but as their name states, there is a limit on the price at which they will execute. There are two prices specified in a stop-limit order; the stop price that will convert the order to a sell order, and the limit price. Instead of the order becoming a market order to sell, the sell order becomes a limit order that will only execute at the limit price or better. Of course, there is no guarantee that this order will be filled, especially if the stock price is rising or falling rapidly. Stop-limit orders are sometimes used because if the price of the stock or other security falls below the limit, then the investor does not want to sell and is willing to wait for the price to rise back to the limit price.

Example:

Frank's ABC stock never drops to the stop-loss price, but it continues to rise and eventually reaches $50 a share. He cancels his stop-loss order at $41 and puts in a stop limit order at $47 with a limit of $45. If the stock price falls below $47, then the order becomes a live sell-limit order. If the stock price falls below $45 before Frank's order is filled, then the order will remain unfilled until the price climbs back to $45.

Many investors will cancel their limit orders if the stock price falls below the limit price, because they placed them solely to limit their loss when the price was dropping. Since they missed their chance to get out, they will then simply wait for the price to go back up and may not wish to sell at that limit price at that point, because the stock may continue to rise. If Frank could not get out at $45 or better and the stock price falls back to $40, then he may be wise to cancel the order, because if it rises back to $45, it may keep going.

As with buy-stop-loss orders, buy-stop-limit orders are used for short sales where the investor is willing to risk waiting for the price to come back down if the purchase is not made at the limit price or better.

Benefits and Risks

Stop-loss and stop-limit orders can provide different types of protection for investors. Stop-loss orders can guarantee execution, but not price. And price slippage frequently occurs upon execution. Most sell-stop orders are filled at a price below the strike price; the amount of difference depends on how fast the price is dropping. An order may get filled for a considerably lower price if the price is plummeting quickly.

Stop-limit orders can guarantee a price limit, but the trade may not be executed. This can saddle the investor with a substantial loss in a fast market, because the limit price may not get filled before the market price drops below that amount. If bad news comes out about a company and the limit price is only $1 or $2 below the stop-loss price, then the investor must hold onto the stock for an indeterminate period before the share price rises again. Both types of orders can be entered as either day or good-until-canceled (GTC) orders.

Choosing which type of order to use essentially boils down to deciding which type of risk is better to take. The first step to using either type of order correctly is to carefully assess how the stock is trading. If the stock is volatile with substantial price movement, then a stop-limit order may be more effective because of its price guarantee. If the trade doesn't execute, then the investor may only have to wait a short time for the price to rise again. A stop-loss order would be appropriate if, for example, bad news comes out about a company that casts doubt upon its long-term future. In this case, the stock price may not return to its current level for months or years, if it ever does, and investors would therefore be wise to cut their losses and take the market price on the sale. A stop-limit order may yield a considerably larger loss if it does not execute.

Another important factor to consider when placing either type of order is where to set the stop and limit prices. Technical analysis can be a useful tool here, and stop-loss prices are often placed at levels of technical support or resistance. Investors who place stop-loss orders on stocks that are steadily climbing should take care to give the stock a little room to fall back, because if they set their stop price too close to the current market price, they may get stopped out due to a relatively small retracement in price. Then they would miss out on the next major surge when the price starts to rise again.

The Bottom Line

Stop-loss and stop-limit orders can provide different types of protection for both long and short investors. Stop-loss orders guarantee execution, while stop-limit orders guarantee price. For more information on these and other types of investment trades, consult your broker or financial advisor.
