Top Services Stocks To Buy Right Now

Although we don't believe in timing the market or panicking over market movements, we do like to keep an eye on big changes -- just in case they're material to our investing thesis.

What:Shares of Global Eagle Entertainment (NASDAQ: ENT  ) rose 12% early Friday, then settled close up around 7% after the in-flight content and connectivity specialist released solid first-quarter results.

So what:Quarterly revenue rose 55%, to $86 million -- compared to analysts' estimates for revenue of $85.4 million --which translated to a slightly narrower net loss of $26.3 million, or $0.47 per share.Meanwhile, first-quarter adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization swung to a $5.1 million gain from a pro forma $0.5 million loss in the same year-ago period.

Now what: Global Eagle Entertainment declined to provide specific forward guidance, but instead stated: "We expect continued growth through the remainder of 2014.Drivers of increased revenue and EBITDA include growth of our content customer base, continued installations of our connectivity systems, the full year impact of the acquisitions of PMG and IFE Services made in 2013, and the realization of integration synergies over the second half of the year."

Top Potential Buyouts: #2, Scripps Networks Interactive (SNI)/AMC Networks

In February, I discussed potential buyouts that could take place within the cable industry. One of the scenarios I mentioned was a merger between Scripps Networks Interactive (SNI) and AMC Networks (AMCX). The combined entity would have three of the top cable networks in terms of viewership with AMC, HGTV and Food Network. Both companies are family-controlled, so any deal would require the support of both the Dolans (AMC) and Scripps (HGTV, Food Network).

  • [By Will Ashworth]

Somebody will buy Scripps Networks Interactive (SNI), given that HGTV and Food Network are both in the top 20. It looked momentarily like Discovery Communications (DISCA) might be the suitor, but the company backed out of talks this past week, preferring to focus on overseas expansion.

  • [By Sara Hov]

Scripps Networks Interactive (NYSE: SNI  ) looks stronger than ever after a great first quarter.

While most cable networks experienced a dip in viewership largely because of the Olympics, Scripps' popular channels -- including HGTV, Food Network, and Travel Channel -- actually increased viewership numbers, especially in the key 25- to 54-year-old demographic advertisers covet.

Top 10 Healthcare Technology Companies To Own In Right Now

Although stocks have powered higher for four-straight sessions, some chart watchers still aren convinced the market downdraft is over.

Despite Tuesday broad rally in stocks, technicians say relatively weak internal readings and a change in leadership warn that a drop at least 6% from current levels is still likely. A full-fledged correction of declines totaling 10% or more remains possible.

One reason to expect further weakness is that the percentage of NYSE stocks above their 200-day moving average, which many use as a guide to predicting long term trends, fell recently below 60%, said Bank of America Merrill Lynch technical research analyst Stephen Suttmeier. That’s a “blatant difference” from the short and shallow pullbacks investors got used to in 2013, Mr. Suttmeier said, because “that didn’t happen last year at all.”

Synthesis Energy Systems (NASDAQ: SYMX) shares jumped 26.01% to $2.18 on the receipt of a 20-year business license for China Clean Coal Gasification joint venture

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

One under-$10 specialty chemicals player that's starting to move within range of triggering a major breakout trade is Synthesis Energy Systems (SYMX), which provides various proprietary gasification technology systems and solutions to the energy and chemical industries worldwide. This stock is off to a red hot start so far in 2014, with shares up a whopping 191%.

If you glance at the chart for Synthesis Energy Systems, you'll see that this stock has been uptrending over the last month and change, with shares moving higher from its low of $1.39 to its recent high of $1.85 a share. During that uptrend, shares of SYMX have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has started to push shares of SYMX within range of triggering a major breakout trade above some key near-term overhead resistance levels.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in SYMX if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $1.85 to $1.86 a share and then once it takes out more key overhead resistance levels at $1.93 to $2 and $2.09 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 594,782 shares. If that breakout gets underway soon, then SYMX will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $2.44 to its 52-week high at $2.49 a share. Any high-volume move above those levels will then give SYMX a chance to tag $3 to $3.50 a share.

Traders can look to buy SYMX off weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support levels at $1.60 to $1.55 a share. One can also buy SYMX off strength once it starts to clear those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

HRL earned one Star in this section for 2.) above. The stock earned a Star as a result of its most recent Debt to Total Capital being less than 45%. The company has paid a cash dividend to shareholders every year since 1928 and has increased its dividend payments for 48 consecutive years.

Dividend Income vs. MMA: Why would you assume the equity risk and invest in a dividend stock if you could earn a better return in a much less risky money market account (MMA) or Treasury bond? This section compares the earning ability of this stock with a high yield MMA. Two items are considered in this section, see page 2 of the linked PDF for a detailed description:

    1. NPV MMA Diff.
    2. Years to > MMA

HRL earned a Star in this section for its NPV MMA Diff. of the $984. This amount is in excess of the $500 target I look for in a stock that has increased dividends as long as HRL has. If HRL grows its dividend at 13.2% per year, it will take 7 years to equal a MMA yielding an estimated 20-year average rate of 3.68%.

The stock earned a Star as a result of its most recent Debt to Total Capital being less than 45%. GWW earned a Star for having an acceptable score in at least two of the four Key Metrics measured.

Rolling 4-yr Div. > 15% means that dividends grew on average in excess of 15% for each consecutive 4 year period over the last 10 years (2003-2006, 2004-2007, 2005-2008, etc.) I consider this a key metric since dividends will double every 5 years if they grow by 15%. The company has paid a cash dividend to shareholders every year since 1965 and has increased its dividend payments for 42 consecutive years.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By John Udovich]

Small cap machine-to-machine (M2M) stock Elecsys Corp (NASDAQ: ESYS) jumped 8.99% yesterday and is up 254% over the past year, meaning it might be time to take a closer look at the stock and its performance verses other small cap M2M stocks like Digi International Inc (NASDAQ: DGII), Numerex Corp (NASDAQ: NMRX) and Sierra Wireless, Inc (NASDAQ: SWIR). First of all though, I should mention that machine-to-machine (M2M) broadly refers to technologies that allow both wireless and wired systems to communicate with other devices of the same type and this can be through any type of technology ranging from instruments to networks to applications that create connections between devices.

  • [By Seth Jayson]

Margins matter. The more Numerex (Nasdaq: NMRX  ) keeps of each buck it earns in revenue, the more money it has to invest in growth, fund new strategic plans, or (gasp!) distribute to shareholders. Healthy margins often separate pretenders from the best stocks in the market. That's why we check up on margins at least once a quarter in this series. Gafisa S.A. (NYSE: GFA) is a homebuilder in Brazil, supposedly with more than $1 billion in projects for 2014 alone. This ADR trades at $3.05 against a 52-week range of $2.22 to $5.24, and this is down only about 2% so far in 2014.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Gafisa (GFA) is a homebuilder in Brazil. This stock closed up 5% to $3.13 in Tuesday's trading session.

    Tuesday's Range: $2.97-$3.15

    52-Week Range: $2.22-$5.24

    Tuesday's Volume: 1.70 million

    Three-Month Average Volume: 1.77 million

From a technical perspective, GFA ripped higher here right above some near-term support at $2.80 with decent upside volume. This stock has been uptrending strong for the last month, with shares moving higher from its low of $2.27 to its intraday high of $3.15. During that move, shares of GFA have been consistently making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of GFA within range of triggering a big breakout trade. That trade will hit if GFA manages to take out Tuesday's high of $3.15 to some past resistance at $3.30 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in GFA as long as it's trending above support at $2.80 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 1.77 million shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then GFA will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at its 200-day moving average of $3.68 to more resistance at $4.20 to $4.70.

We also note there has been a healthy pace of M&A consolidation in the semiconductor capital equipment industry in the past few years. For example, ASML Holdings (ASML) recently acquired Cymer and Tokyo Electron Ltd. (TYO: 8038) acquired FSI International. Always touchable money is cash. For individuals, there's little reason for it not to be a simple bank account, money market fund, etc. For most investors, you can just let this stock sit in your brokerage account. Many brokers will sweep unused cash into a money market account or other form of savings where it can earn a tiny amount of interest for you while staying totally liquid. One advantage of keeping cash in this form is that you can look at your cash and stock positions on the same (web)page any time you want. So, for example, if you know you want to keep 10% of your portfolio in cash you can see that you have $12,000 in cash as part of your $120,000 brokerage account and that means you are right on target with your liquidity goal.

Top Retail Stocks To Buy Right Now

Having cratered in value as the effects of "showrooming" decimated sales, Best Buy's (NYSE: BBY  ) stock has staged a remarkable recovery in 2013, already having more than doubled in value. With the passage in the U.S. Senate of the so-called Internet sales tax -- its formal name is the Marketplace Fairness Act -- investors are hoping this trend of greater growth (or at least stock price appreciation) can continue if the playing field is leveled for all retailers.

As is well known at this point, online retailers such as Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN  ) and eBay (NASDAQ: EBAY  ) had their growth potential early on bolstered by their ability to avoid paying sales taxes on purchases made in states where they didn't have a physical presence. Best Buy, Circuit City, Sixth Avenue Electronics -- retailers in general, and not just sellers of electronic consumer goods -- were placed at a competitive disadvantage because the prices consumers paid were elevated relative to those paid at online sellers.

AlamyA Starbucks coffee shop in downtown Beijing, China. • There are prices to be paid for expanding your economy at a gallop, and China pays plenty of them. Today, anyone looking out across that nation's northern cities can see that winter has arrived there -- or rather, they can't, because the smog is so appallingly bad. In the city of Harbin, for example, visibility dropped to around 11 yards Monday, and small-particle pollution soared to 40 times higher than the international safety standard -- a record, by the way, though one we're sure nobody would want to break. It's a pretty clear case of cause and effect: Harbin's city heating systems were fired up on Sunday, and by Monday, you could barely see your hand in front of your face. • While we're on the subject of the world's rising economic superpower, China has a big complaint with Starbucks (SBUX) -- and it's probably the same one you have: Why does it charge so much for coffee? This may shock those of us in the U.S. who feel we're paying through the nose for our lattes, but Starbucks charges more in China than it does elsewhere -- about a third more than in the United States. • But back in America, the biggest news involving your money today is a no-brainer: the continuing glitches in the Obamacare websites. The administration has called out the computer cavalry, expanding the team that's trying to get the system working properly. And President Obama plans to speak publicly about the problems Monday. But in the meantime, the website is producing far more complaints than anything else. • We all know that taking out a student loan requires filling out a raft of complicated paperwork, but paying it back, at least, ought to be simple. Unfortunately, it's not, the advocates over at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau inform us in a new report. Some loan servicers -- the companies lenders hire to collect payments on private student loans -- make a concerted effort to maximize fee

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By James E. Brumley]

Truth be told, it's not clear if SK3 Group Inc. (OTCMKTS:SKTO) is best described when compared to a name like Cerner Corporation (NASDAQ:CERN), or to a Gentiva Health Services, Inc. (NASDAQ:GTIV). The company's got elements of both major industries being represented by CERN and GTIV (home health care, and information technology), with the addition of another budding industry thrown into the mix. One thing IS clear though... SKTO shares have decidedly reversed a nasty downtrend, and may now be one of the market's best small cap healthcare speculative trades.
