Top 10 Food Companies To Invest In Right Now

The way many sell-side analysts talk about Kraft Foods (Nasdaq:KRFT) and the company's CEO Tony Vernon, you would think they make sure to never go to bed at night before kissing a picture of them both and writing their names with little hearts substituting for the ��'s�� And this is for a company whose organic growth just hasn't been that good since the split with Mondelez (Nasdaq:MDLZ).

Now, to be fair, I do think Kraft is a good business and a very well-run company. In more than a few cases, Kraft either dominates its category or frankly is the category. Moreover, I like the motivational approach the company takes toward incentivizing employees, the company's focus on innovation, and its willingness to shift resources away from brands that can't carry their own luggage. On the other hand, while I do share Wall Street's optimism that Kraft will eventually post margins and free cash flow that are just as good as, if not leading, its peers, the valuation already assumes precisely that.

The stock was up 65 percent through the first half of 2014, a surprising spike for the leader in single-serve premium coffee, which was starting to see its growth decelerate. The initial catalyst for Keurig Green Mountain's surge came in February when Coca-Cola (KO) paid $1.25 billion for a 10 percent stake in the company. Coca-Cola paid roughly $75 a share for the stock, and it paid a much higher price for more a couple of months later when it boosted its stake to 16 percent. It's a significant development when the world's largest beverage company takes such a sizable stake in a niche player, but Coca-Cola's validation of the K-Cup champ has also made that investment more valuable. That initial $1.25 billion purchase is now worth more than $2 billion. Given the meandering ways of Coca-Cola's own business -- analysts expect to see flat sales growth this year -- riding the coattails of a hot beverage company could be just the ticket to silence those skeptics reminiscing about Coca-Cola's glory years of heady growth. The Mountain is Always Greener on the Other Side Coca-Cola's investment isn't the only reason why Keurig Green Mountain has been percolating.     Elsewhere, Hillshire Brands� (NYSE: HSH  ) �jumped 5% as Tyson Foods� (NYSE: TSN  ) �appears to have won its bidding war with Pilgrim's Pride�for the parent of Jimmy Dean sausages, as Pilgrim's Pride withdrew its proposal following Tyson's latest offer. The nation's No. 1 poultry producer said it will pay $7.7 billion for Hillshire, or $63 a share. Hillshire has not formally accepted the bid, but the acquisition seems inevitable given that Tyson is the only remaining suitor. Notably, Tyson shares fell 6.5%, a sign that investors believe the poultry-maker is overpaying for the parent of Ball Park franks. Hillshire shares, meanwhile, have gained nearly 70% since offering to buy Pinnacle Foods, which sparked the bidding war between Pilgrim's and Tyson to acquire it.
