Q: Is there a way to invest in robots and drones?
A: Consumers might be delighted with Amazon's recent revelation it's testing drone-shipments of packages. But investors are unclear what this costly experiment might mean for the bottom line.
RIEDER: Bezos' drone delivery publicity coup
BEZOS: Drones will be 'as normal as seeing mail trucks'
But if anything's clear, investors are starting to understand robots and drones are quickly growing beyond their traditional dead-end jobs on factory floors. There could be money to be made by investors who pick the right companies at the forefront of drone technology.
But for investors looking to bet on the rise of the machine, there aren't many options. Perhaps the closest company to a pure-play robotic stock is iRobot (symbol: IRBT). The maker of the ubiquitous Roomba vacuum cleaner continues to broaden the range of robots it makes and improve the ones it already sells.
