The Cupertino-based technology bellwether, Apple Inc. (AAPL), had a very busy Tuesday as it unveiled the new iPad and Mavericks operating system in addition to announcing a frenzy of apps and improvements to its existing product lineup.
Amid the flurry of announcements throughout the day, the new iPads were at the center stage. Apple unveiled a faster iPad mini along with a sharper display, although the biggest announcement on the day was the iPad Air, which is a thinner and lighter version of its predecessors. The new iPad Air is 20% thinner, weighing in at one pound, and is expected to go on sale internationally on November 1st for $499. The iPad Mini on the other hand is expected to launch later in November with a retail price tag of $399 for the 16-gigabyte version.
Apple also announced that its 10th major operating system release, named OS X Mavericks, is available for free from the Mac App Store; the new OS has more than 200 new features, better power efficiency and performance, and offers better multi-display support across its entire product lineup.
In the world of software, Apple unveiled a host of new apps in addition to releasing major updates to its existing lineup. The new apps include a productivity suite called “iWork,” which makes creating, editing, and sharing documents easier than ever. Among the popular apps which have been refreshed with new features, are iMove, GarageBand, iCloud, and iPhoto.
Apple shares had a volatile trading day, ultimately ending in red territory on Tuesday with a 0.29% loss. The stock is down 5% YTD.
