As Online Shopping Grows So Do Growing Pains

online shoppingRoss D. Franklin/APAmazon.com employee Hugh Johnson Jr. packs up a box at an Amazon.com warehouse earlier this month. Americans waited until the last minute to buy holiday gifts, but retailers weren't prepared for the spike in sales. Heavy spending in the final days of the mostly lackluster season sent sales up 3.5 percent between Nov. 1 and Tuesday, according to MasterCard Advisors SpendingPulse, which tracks payments but doesn't give dollar figures. Online shopping led the uptick, with spending up 10 percent to $38. 91 billion between Nov. 2 and Sunday, research firm ComScore (SCOR) said. "We always have last-minute Charlies, but this year even people who normally complete shopping earlier completed shopping later," said Marshal Cohen, chief retail analyst at market research firm NPD Group. The late surge caught companies off guard. UPS (UPS) and FedEx (FDX) failed to deliver some packages by Christmas due to a combination of poor weather and overloaded systems, leaving some unhappy holiday shoppers. Justin Londagin and his wife ordered their 7-year-old son a jersey of Russell Wilson of the Seattle Seahawks from NFL's website on Dec. 19. They paid $12.95 extra for two-day shipping to get it to their Augusta, Kan., home before Christmas, but it didn't arrive in time. "We had to get creative and wrote him a note from Santa to tell him that the jersey fell out of the sleigh and Santa will get it to him as soon as he could," he said. Amazon.com (AMZN) is offering customers with delayed shipments a refund on their shipping charges and $20 toward a future purchase. And other retailers such as Macy's said they are looking into the situation. The last-minute surge this year solidifies the increasing popularity of online shopping, which accounts for about 10 percent of sales during the last three months of the year. It also underscores the challenges that companies face delivering on the experience, particularly during the holiday shopping season that runs from the beginning of November through December. Analysts say FedEx and UPS typically work closely with big retailers to get a sense of the volume of packages they'll handle during peak times like the holiday season. Extra flights, trucks and seasonal workers can be added if the projections are large. But this year, David Vernon, a senior research analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein, said weather played a role. The early December ice storms in Dallas could have hurt operations, he said, and packages can start to accumulate. And that got compounded by a late surge in shipments, he said. "Clearly, as a group, [they] underestimated the demand for Internet retailing during the holidays," Vernon said. Another problem was the growing popularity of retailers offering free shipping. Amazon, for one, has a two-day free shipping offer that comes with its $79 annual Prime membership. The company said in the third week of December alone, more than 1 million people signed up for the membership. "Frankly the right hand wasn't talking to the left," said Forrester analyst Sucharita Mulpuru. "The marketing teams of a lot of web retailers [offering free shipping] were not talking to the operations and supply chain teams." The resulting delayed shipments could be a problem for shippers. UPS and FedEx didn't quantify how many packages were affected but said they were just a small fraction of total holiday deliveries. "The central pillar of their business is a perception of reliability with their customers," said Jeremy Robinson-Leon, COO of Group Gordon, a corporate and crisis PR firm. This year's snafus "just really erodes trust among customers." Still, analysts say people will still shop online. "Consumers tend to have a short memory, especially if you fast forward to another year," said Andrew Lipsman, vice president of industry analysis for comScore. Indeed, some shoppers are taking the delays in stride. Traci Arbios, who lives in Clovis, Calif., did about 90 percent of her shopping online. Most items included free shipping and everything arrived on time except one package she ordered from a seller on eBay (EBAY) that was sent first class by the U.S. Postal Service on Dec. 12. It still hadn't arrived by Thursday. "Everything arrived on time except this one item," she said. "It's not going to stop me from shopping online." -.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By David Hanson]

    10. DryShips (NASDAQ: DRYS  ) Some pundits and investors called Buffett crazy when he plowed over $30 billion into a railroad. Could Buffett further increase Berkshire's exposure to the industrial transportation and logistics business by buying stake in an ocean transporter? Maybe, but it won't be via DryShips. The company has been flailing in the wind since the financial crisis as it has struggled to generate free cash flow. Solvency questions have been raised, and the debt-heavy balance sheet will strike fear into the hearts of equity investors.

  • [By MTF Investing]

Why is it that every time I try and defend a company that I feel good about, they go and do something frustrating for investors like dilute shareholder value? For the record, I am a fan of DryShips, Inc (DRYS), and have written several articles about the company, and the turnaround in the Dry Shipping industry. So was this a smart move or just another way that George Economou has used the company as a way to rob share holders of value?

Back in early November, yours truly penned some bullish thoughts on FreeSeas Inc. (NASDAQ:FREE), NewLead Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:NEWL), and DryShips Inc. (NASDAQ:DRYS). While each stock has its own merits, the crux of the bullishness was ultimately rooted in the brewing rebound of the Baltic Dry Index... a reflection of the prices companies pay shippers like FreeSeas and DryShips to haul goods over the ocean.

5 Best Forestry Stocks For 2014

salesforce.com's (NYSE: CRM  ) earnings announcement didn't sit well with investors. With its stock down over 6% since sharing its fiscal 2014 Q1 results, you'd think Salesforce had either missed estimates by a mile, provided a poor outlook for the balance of its fiscal year, or both. But this is where things get interesting: Neither occurred. When you look at non-GAAP results (in other words, removing one-time items), Salesforce grew revenue and operating cash flow, and raised guidance for the year. So, what's the problem?

A few specs
It seems Salesforce has always traded like a growth stock: With a non-GAAP price-to-earnings ratio in the 85 to 90 range, investors and analysts alike have been content to focus on revenue growth and future prospects in its core customer relationship management market and cloud solutions. So Salesforce's 28% jump in revenue compared to last year, up to $893 million this past quarter, would appear to be a win. Incidentally, the $893 million in revenue beat average analyst expectations for the quarter by $6 million.

The company is not like other miners -- including Pan American Silver (NASDAQ: PAAS  ) and First Majestic (NYSE: AG  ) -- in that it has a unique business plan that insulates it against many of the vagaries of the mining business. Moreover, because silver will always have a significant industrial demand component, even with the heightened volatility you see in the silver market, maintaining exposure to silver is appropriate.

Everything You Need to Know About the Fed's Policy Meeting

Today's FOMC meeting will kick off a two-day discussion of economic policy - and will leave unprepared investors confused...

Both the FOMC policy statement and its economic and market projections will be released on Wednesday at 2 p.m. EDT and will be followed by U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke's press conference at 2:30 p.m.

[Editor's Note: Stay tuned to Money Morning for a Wednesday FOMC Meeting roundup.]

The question hot on everyone's tongue is what the FOMC will decide to do about the $85 billion in monthly bond buying - will the inevitable quantitative easing (QE) taper finally begin?

Every time the Fed has stopped a QE program, the markets tumbled:

when qe ends

Almost three-quarters of the 69 economists polled after August's jobs data was released anticipated the FOMC would vote to taper its bond-buying program, according to Reuters. The central bank is projected to trim its monthly spending on QE asset purchases by $10 billion.
Conversely, rumor has it the FOMC may, for a third consecutive time, lower growth forecasts for 2013.

That's because annual inflation is about half a percentage point below the goal the Fed set in December. Plus, although unemployment was lowered to 7.3% in August, that's mainly because so many Americans are dropping out of the labor force:

More than 4 million people have been out of work for more than six months, and a doleful 11.5 million are looking for work in total. In the first seven months of 2013, 953,000 jobs have been created; a full 731,000 of those, or 77%, have been part-time.

In sum, 22.1 million Americans are either unemployed or underemployed.

Even if the Fed doesn't announce a taper, it will be deciding on growth forecasts through 2016. Yes, that seems like a far-away number - but markets will react immediately.

What investors need to be ready for is the Fed to possibly announce a taper and also lower growth forecasts - two clashing moves.

So why would the FOMC do both?

"It wouldn't surprise me if the FOMC lowers growth forecasts for strategic reasons," says Money Morning's Capital Wave Strategist Shah Gilani. "If they lower them and then the numbers come in better than expected, they have room to start tapering and the market won't freak out as much."

On the other hand, if the FOMC meeting today raises the growth forecast or leaves it as is, and growth numbers come in lower, the market will rally on the belief that the Fed will not taper at all.

"The FOMC is inclined to move toward winding down their balance sheet and is counting on doing that if doing so won't freak out the markets and ruin the wealth effect triage triangle: pump up the banks, pump up the markets, pump up consumer confidence to pump up consumer spending," Gilani explains.

When Bernanke speaks on Wednesday after the Fed meeting concludes, he's anticipated to discuss the decline in unemployment, in addition to other jobs data like the drop in labor participation. Plus, he should discuss interest rates and issues stemming from the Syrian crisis and comment on the debt-ceiling debate.

The central bank will not release the minutes of the two-day meeting until Oct. 9, so you'll have to tune in Wednesday for Money Morning's FOMC Meeting Roundup.

It turns out the FOMC meeting today isn't the only hot Fed news swirling this week...

Today's "End of Summers" Announcement

Speaking of Bernanke, you may have heard the announcement Sunday evening that Larry Summers is withdrawing from the running to become the next Federal Reserve Chairman.

I hope you could hear the collective sigh being released by us Money Morning folk.

"Summers bowing out is a reflection of the vote counting the Administration did; they knew Obama didn't have the political clout to shove Summers through," Gilani weighs in. "So, why not make nice and bow out so as not to embarrass the president and take up even more of his dwindling political poker chips."

This move makes Fed Vice Chairwoman Janet Yellen a likely shoo-in.

On Yellen, Gilani says:

"Janet is considered next up and a consensus builder. But, anyone the president puts up better be ready for bruising confirmation hearings. The markets are eating all this up because Janet is a dove and never met a printing press she didn't know how to operate."

Yellen, Summers, or whomever, for now investors are left to deal with the aftermath of Bernanke's QE policy. It's placed all Americans at great financial risk.

Right now, his printing presses are still running... but by Friday, who knows?

We figure you've got very little time before he pulls the plug for good, and the markets go on a death spiral. Money Morning's top experts put together a "safety plan" you can use to protect your wealth right away.

Surface Served Its Purpose for Microsoft

The Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT  ) Surface has been viewed as a bust, particularly after a $900 million write-off in the second quarter of the year. But few point to the fact that Microsoft has gone from almost no market share in tablets and smartphones to a growing, albeit small, market share in the second quarter. The company now commands 4.5% of the tablet market and 3.7% of smartphones, and with more devices hitting shelves every day, contributor Travis Hoium thinks the company still has upside in the mobile business.

Let's also not forget that Microsoft is one of only a handful of companies that dominate tech, and at stake is the future of a trillion-dollar revolution: mobile. To find out which of these giants is set to dominate the next decade, we've created a free report called "Who Will Win the War Between the 5 Biggest Tech Stocks?" Best Semiconductor Stocks For 2014

The Department of Defense awarded Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT  ) a $104.7 million defense contract Monday -- but semiconductor maker Xilinx (NASDAQ: XLNX  ) could be the real winner in this contract.

According to a DoD summary of contracts issued Monday, Lockheed won the firm-fixed-price contract to procure and deliver 83,169 Xilinx field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) needed for the manufacture of several "lots" of Lockheed's F-35 Lightning II fighter jet. Specifically, Lockheed needs the devices for "low rate initial production Lot VII" all the way through "full rate production Lot III" of the Joint Strike Fighter.

Thus, it seems likely that much, if not all, of the revenue awarded to Lockheed via this contract will actually go to Xilinx, as it builds the chips needed to build Lockheed's birds.

Once manufactured, the planes in question will be destined for use by the U.S. Air Force, Marine Corps, and Navy, as well as for the militaries of Australia, Denmark, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Turkey, and the U.K.

Advantest test systems for memory semiconductors are test systems designed to test high-speed/high performance dynamic random access memory (DRAM) semiconductors used in equipment such as personal computers and servers, as well as flash memory semiconductors used in digital consumer products.

Test systems for memory semiconductors consist of a mainframe and one or more test heads. During testing, a device interface is attached to the test head. During the front-end testing process, wafers are loaded by a prober and are connected to the test system for memory semiconductors through the device interface. Electric signals between the die and the test systems for memory semiconductors are transmitted through probe pins located in the device interface and tested. After front-end te! sting is completed, the wafer is diced into separate dies and properly functioning dies are packaged. During back-end testing, test handlers are used to load these packaged devices onto the test heads, and electric signals are transmitted between the devices and the test heads via the device interface and tested. The test results are analyzed by the test systems for memory semiconductorshardware circuits and software programs. Customized software programs for each semiconductor are required to analyze the semiconductor tests and test data.

Advantest main product lines of test systems for memory semiconductors are the T5500 series, the T5300 series and the T5700 series. Nissan's done better this year than electronics maker Advantest (NYSE: ATE  ) , but this stock absolutely blew up over the past week. Advantest's shares shot higher by more than 9%, wiping out pessimism over the company's weak earnings released a few weeks ago. Advantest's net loss and operating profit both fell below its guidance, and despite this week's investor optimism, the future's murky for this company. Financial site TheStreet downgraded the stock last week, citing Advantest's falling earnings, among other issues.

Solitron (SODI) sells at 74% of NCAV, has decent z- and f-scores, a FCF margin of 5.3% and an ROA of 12%.

Micropac (MPAD) sells at 83% of NCAV, has similar (slightly better) z- and f-scores, a FCF margin of 6%, but has ROA of 28%.

ADDvantage (AEY) sells at 95% of NCAV, has similar (in the ballpark) scores and FCF and ROA of 23%.

  • [By Geoff Gannon] on the amount of stock you can buy and the position size you like. For me, I try not to start buying a stock that I think will never make up 10% of my portfolio. If you don mind having 5% positions in your portfolio, your portfolio can obviously be twice as big as mine and you can still consider buying the same small stocks I do. In terms of specific stocks, it depends on the amount of float and the volume the stock trades in an average month. We are really getting into specifics here. And I may be boring people. But if you like to hear more about the minutiae of how you actually buy and sell tiny stocks like these, let me know, and Il do an article on the subject.

By the way, there is a hard and fast rule of thumb that it usually makes no sense to invest in a company with a market cap that is smaller than your portfolio. This is true for both fund and individual investors. Funds break it all the time. But, frankly, it is probably a waste of an analyst/fund manager time to even analyze such tiny positions relative to the size of the whole portfolio. Since even when we are discussing very small stocks we are still talking about millions and millions of dollars in market cap, this is hardly a concern for most individuals.

So, for individual investors, actual inability to acquire enough shares of a company to meaningful influence their portfolio is rarely the problem. If you bid for a stock month after month youl get your shares.

The concern for individual investors is not whether buying enough shares is possible. The concern is how quickly and easily you can buy and sell. This is what we call iquidity./p>

Instead of thinking about stocks as liquid or illiquid, you should think in terms of your portfolio and your liquidity needs. It doesn't make much sense to use what I'll call an "objective" (as in stock-oriented) approach to liquidity rather than a "subjective" (as in investor-oriented) approach to liquidity.

    Micropac

Micropac is 76% owned by Heinz-Werner Hempel. He a German businessman. You can see the German company he founded here. He had control of Micropac for a long-time. I don have an exact number in front of me. But I would guess it been something like 25 years.

    ADDvantage

ADDvantage Technologies is controlled by the Chymiak brothers. See the company April 4 press release explaining their decision to turn over the CEO position to an outsider. Regardless, the Chymiaks still control 47% of the company. Ken Chymiak is now chairman. And David Chymiak is still a director and now the company chief technology officer. Clearly, it still their company.

By the way, the name ADDvantage Technologies has nothing to do with the Chymiaks. Today AEY really traces its roots to a private company called Tulsat. The Chymiak brothers acquired that company about 27 years ago. So, effectively, when you buy shares of AEY you are buying into a 27-year-old family-controlled company.

That pretty typical in the world of net-nets.

    Solitron

Solitron Devices is 29% owned by Shevach Saraf. He has been the CEO for 20 years. The post-bankruptcy Solitron has never known another CEO. Before the bankruptcy, Solitron was a much bigger, much different company. So even though we are not talking about the founder here and even though 70% of the company shares are not held by the CEO wee still talking about a company where one person has a lot of control. Solitron only has three directors. Saraf is the chairman, CEO, president, CFO and treasurer. Neither of the other two directors joined the board within the last 15 years. So, we aren talking about a lot of tumult at the top.

In fact, profitable net-nets seem to be especially common candidates for abandoning the responsibilities of a public company without actually getting taken private.
